Our History

North of the River Chamber of Commerce was originally founded October 17, 1928. The organization started as the “North of the River Club.” During the duration of the North of the River Club, it was responsible for Lighting Districts, Recreation District, North High School, Renumbering of Business District, Manor Street Bridge, Chester Avenue Bridge and a Sanitary District Service. Eventually North of the River Club disbanded.

During the August 1985 meeting of “North of the River Association,” it was recommended the name be changed to North of the River Chamber of Commerce. Paper work was then filed with the State of California to legalize the Chamber. The goal was to provide a Chamber to meet the needs of the local area at a price small businesses could afford.

Our Mission: "The North of the River Chamber of Commerce is organized to advance the general welfare and prosperity of the North of the River citizens and business community.  All necessary means of promotion shall be provided.  Particular attention and emphasis shall be given to the economic, commercial, residential, cultural and educational interests in the area."

Today the North of the River Chamber of Commerce is home to more than 200 members and focuses on building business not only in the Oildale area but in the growing Bakesfield suburb of Rosedale.  But, your business doesn't have to be located in the NOR area.

All we ask is you share our same dedication, passion and enthusiasm for expanding business and employment opportunities for residents of Kern County.
