About
What is the NOR Chamber?
The North of the River Chamber of Commerce traces its roots back to October 17, 1928, when it was initially formed as the “North of the River Club.” Over the years, this club made significant contributions to the community, playing pivotal roles in the creation of Lighting Districts, the Recreation District, North High School, the renumbering of the Business District, and the establishment of bridges at Manor Street and Chester Avenue. It was also responsible for a comprehensive Sanitary District Service.
As times evolved, so did the needs of the community. Recognizing a gap, the “North of the River Association” in August 1985 proposed a change to its identity. It was then that the shift from an association to a more inclusive and proactive “North of the River Chamber of Commerce” was initiated. The subsequent legal paperwork was filed with the State of California, formalizing the Chamber’s presence. Our primary aim was—and remains—to create an inclusive chamber that caters to the needs of the local area, ensuring affordability for all small businesses.
What area does North of the River serve?
Originating in Oildale and lovingly known as the ‘Oildale Chamber’ for many years, the North of the River Chamber of Commerce was formed to serve the businesses in the community ‘North of the River’ (i.e. Oildale). As the communities ‘North of the River’ grew, the Chamber expanded to serve the region including communities within Norris, Fruitvale, Olive Drive, Rosedale, Greenacres, RiverLakes, Westdale, and Stockdale West. Today, the North of the River Chamber of Commerce emphasizes efforts on and support for the Northwest Bakersfield communities; collaborates with businesses and organizations within Bakersfield, Shafter, and Northern Kern; hosts events in Southwest Bakersfield and beyond; and includes a diverse membership, with members that house offices anywhere in Bakersfield or serve residents within the region.
